Seinan Gakuin University was founded in 1916 and currently enrolls about 8,000 undergraduate students. Fukuoka, where Seinan Gakuin is located, is on the island of Kyushu and is only 335 miles from Seoul, Korea, and 540 miles from Shanghai, making it a good location to explore other Asian countries. Boasting an excellent transport system, Fukuoka is a great location for international exchange students. Exchange students will find it easy to immerse themselves in this school and culture as there are many attractions in this international city.

Students may select courses they are interested in from the wide variety SGU offers. Four levels of Japanese language instruction are available, with students placed into beginning, pre-intermediate, intermediate or advanced courses based on pre-admission testing. Students can join the beginning class level with no prior knowledge of Japanese. Except for advanced Japanese, language classes meet for 90-minute periods per week. In addition to classroom study, off-campus activities such as trips to museums and cultural and government facilities are also common, helping foreign students gain a deeper understanding of Japanese culture (from SGU website).

Students must complete a International Transient Enrollment Form at Samford in order to receive credit for the courses.

All students are welcome to apply for this program, but preference will be given to students with evidence of independence, strong applications, competitive GPAs, and interviews. Recommendations come from professors in World Languages and Cultures.

Meals: Students are responsible for purchasing their own meals at the university cafeterias  or buying groceries and cooking for themselves.
Accommodation: Students have the option to live in a residence hall, apartment, or homestay. After acceptance to the program, students will fill out a housing questionnaire and be placed in an assignment. If choosing an off-campus apartment, students are responsible for finding their housing.
Visa: You must apply for the following Japanese visa when studying in Japan - Visa Category: "General Visa", Status of Residence: "College Student". In order to apply for the Japanese visa, a Certificate of Eligibility is required. An application for the Certificate of Eligibility is made by a proxy (in this case, the Center for International Education Office) to the nearest regional immigration authority. The certificate is issued to incoming students by the regional immigration authority under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice. After the issuance of the Certificate of Eligibility, the Center for International Education Office will mail to your home institution. After receiving the Certificate of Eligibility, visit a nearest Japanese embassy or consulate along with the other necessary application documents (from SGU website).

Insurance: Students are required to enroll in Personal Accident insurance and National Health Insurance. See more information about this insurance on SGU’s website here:
